We love a good bar with an interesting concept, something that makes it stand out from the rest. Le Mtl Resto + Bar has just that, at first it seems like a typical Montreal bar with a few bar bites, perfect for sharing, especially if you’re feeling peckish in between cocktails. But if you look at their menu, you’ll see that their cocktails and dishes are all of various ethnicities. What’s up with that?
Both their cocktail and dinner menus are inspired by the various ethnicities that make up Montreal culture. It’s a rather interesting concept because what is Montreal but a melting pot of people from all over the world. And let’s get a little political, to show that the Divas have some depth, in the wake of Trump’s reformed America, a little ethnic love goes a long way!
Diva #1 loves Bloody Caesars, they are her kryptonite, and she’s Greek, so a Greek Bloody Caesar seemed like a fabulous idea to her! With a Kalamata olive, cube of feta and slice of cucumber as the adornment, it was a Greek salad in a Bloody Caesar. We also tried their Italian cocktail, a twist on the classic Aperol Spritz with a raspberry liqueur, balsamic vinegar and strawberry purée. A touch sweet, it was a delicious cocktail!
With an in house DJ, Le Mtl Resto + Bar has that Montreal bar atmosphere that is relaxed with ambiance music. We checked out their menu and right away noticed how affordable it was. Their appetizers are almost all 9.50$, and they offer 3 choices for 27$ or 5 choices for 43.75$, so you can make a little appetizer board that is perfect for sharing. It isn’t anything complicated, just tasty little bar bites!
Since it was an event, food was being passed around so that we can get an idea of the dishes that Le Mtl Resto + Bar has to offer. The salmon tartare was prepared in a Greek style with tzatziki, caviar and pita chips, the tzatziki or Greek taste didn’t particularly stand out but the fish was very fresh and we enjoyed this salmon tartare, as well as the salmon gravlax that was being passed around.
The beef carpaccio was prepared in an italian style with cauliflower, a Grana Padano crumble, cherry tomatoes confit with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. We enjoyed the touch of creaminess with the flavourful beef carpaccio, it was an interesting dressing that stood out from other beef carpaccio appetizers that we have tried.
The creamy rigatoni au gratin can only be described as a mac n’ cheese like pasta dish. It was made with chorizo and manchengo cheese for that Spanish feel, the chorizo didn’t stand out, they could have added more, but we only had a little canapé at their event, so perhaps a plate of this creamy rigatoni would have more chorizo.
We finished our night with their Portuguese poutine made with roasted potatoes that were very tasty, a BBQ piri piri sauce that was rather good, and the usual cheese curds. Roasted Portuguese chicken was added and we have to admit, though we aren’t fans of poutine, this one packed a punch. We finished our night with the Chinese and English cocktails, and rather enjoyed ourselves.
Le Mtl Resto + Bar is that little neighborhood bar on St-Hubert street in the Plateau that you go in for a fun cocktail and to grab a bite if you’re feeling peckish. Their ode to the cultures that make up Montreal in both their dinner and cocktail menus make this litte resto + bar different from the rest!
