Drinking is a necessary evil…
How have we not yet reviewed Le Mal Nécessaire? We adore this place! So much so that we included it in our piece on how to spend 36 Hours in Montreal. Located in Chinatown, this tiki cocktail bar is under Fung Shing restaurant which prepares a few Cantonese dishes for the bar like dumplings, Singapore style noodles, general tao chicken, etc. Montreal is all about fusion restaurants and bars, and this place is no different, this is where a tiki cocktail bar can meet Asian cuisine! Just look for the bright neon green pineapple on St-Laurent boul. in Chinatown, and go down the ominous basement stteps into Le Mal Nécessaire.
Located under a Chinese restaurant, it’s always too warm, actually it’s sweltering, really adding to that tiki bar feel. Some of their cocktails are available in pineapples and coconuts, so you really do feel like you’re on vacation. If you want to go for a classic, try their Pina Colada Supreme which is made with a house-made cream of coconut, coconut water, fresh pineapple and varied liquors.
Le Mal Nécessaire is known for its Drunken Masters Competition where 15 contestants all make 5 cocktails, and need to show their speed and know-how to the judges in a crowded bar full of spectators. There is a final competition in December where all the Drunken Masters from various competitions during the year can compete, and the fastest bartender is crowned.
Our favourite Le Mal Nécessaire cocktail is their Abacaxi Mai Tai that is in a pineapple and full of Bacardi black, Bacardi gold, and Cointreau, with plenty of pineapple, lemon and honey to offset the tangy pineapple. It’s absolutely delicious, and that glorious boozy feeling sorta sneaks up on you because it’s so flavourful you drink it quickly. The prices for these fancy cocktails are steep, but each drink has 5 oz of alcohol and it is served with the entire fruit, it’s like getting a little snack with your cocktail!
If cocktails with coconut and pineapple aren’t for you, fret not! The mixologists behind the bar can make everything from a Bloody Caesar made with house-made clamato with hints of cod and kelp, a gin tonic made with house-made tonic, their take on the Perfect Storm cocktail, and anything else that you can imagine. Le Mal Nécessaire is one of our favourite cocktail bars in Montreal, and if you want to try something a little different, you should definitely stop by!
