El Zaziummm

You’ve likely passed colourful front, comical signage and the way El Zaziummm opens into the street 100 times. After all, it’s been brightening up Laurier East for 25 years. That’s right 25 years, and they boast some of the best Tex-Mex food that this city has to offer. When we arrived at the media event to celebrate their 25th anniversary, the first thing that we noticed was the goat eating hay at the front of El Zaziummm, definitely an interesting addition to the party. The margaritas were flowing and they were delicious, we harshly judge a Mexican restaurant based on its cocktails, especially margaritas. Part of that fabulous Mexican atmosphere is not only eating tacos but getting a little boozy too.

Montreal has a few fabulous taquerias but El Zaziummm offers that fabulous kitschy Mexican experience of yester-years. And we don’t mean that in a bad way, we mean plenty of sombreros, bright colours and that busy style of Mexican restaurant that we can trace back to the 1990s in Montreal. They don’t only serve tacos, but all sorts of classic and innovative Tex Mex dishes.

The gazpacho was refreshing, the tacos tasty but the coconut shrimp is what really tickled our fancy. We could have eaten a bucket of those tasty jumbo shrimp, deep fried in delicious coconut batter. God dammit we’d love to see those coconut shrimp in a taco with a pineapple salsa. These Divas are rather innovative like that 😉

Besides tacos, guac, margartas and coconut shrimp, El Zaziummm is know for their monster sandwich that weights 3 ½ lbs. consisting of 2 lbs of grilled chicken, tomatoes and guacamole, shredded cheese and bacon make up this monster of a sandwich. At one point they even had a challenge that if you could eat this baby in one sitting you’d make it on their wall of fame!

We definitely want to return to El Zaziumm, what we tried was tasty but there was so much more to the menu.  They’ve been in business for 25 years, so they must know a thing or two about Mexican food, check them out and tell us what you think!
